Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek ϕλεβ- , ϕλέψ , -itis suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕλεβ-, ϕλέψ vein (see phlebo- comb. form) + -itis suffix, after French phlébite (G. Breschet in Journal complémentaire du Dict. des sci. méd. 2 (1818) 325 ). Compare Italian flebite (1819; < French).
Medicine.
Inflammation of a vein or veins; an instance of this.
