Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin phīmōsis.
Etymology: < classical Latin phīmōsis contraction of the prepuce (Celsus) < Hellenistic Greek ϕίμωσις contraction of the prepuce, stopping up an orifice (Galen) < ancient Greek ϕιμοῦν to shut up, muzzle ( < ϕιμός muzzle, nose-band, constriction, of unknown origin) + -ωσις -osis suffix.
