Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: philo- comb. form, Greek θήρ , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < philo- comb. form + ancient Greek θήρ wild beast (see thero- comb. form) + -ian suffix. Compare ancient Greek ϕιλόθηρος fond of hunting, ϕιλοθηρία love of the chase. With use as noun compare earlier philozoist n., philozoonist n.; with use as adjective compare earlier philozoic adj.
