Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: philosophy n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < philosophy n. + -ism suffix, probably partly after French philosophisme wrong-headed, erroneous philosophy (1777 in this sense; now usually in sense ‘misuse of philosophy’ (1812 in this sense)). Compare Italian filosofismo (1753). Compare slightly later philosophist n. 2 and also sophism n.
Chiefly derogatory.
Philosophical thought, esp. of a shallow or affected kind; an instance of this; a shallow or wrong-headed philosophical system or statement.In early use frequently applied to the rationalist and sceptical views of the French Enlightenment thinkers.
