Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French peautrer ; pewter n., -er suffix1.
Etymology: Partly < Anglo-Norman peautrer (14th cent. or earlier; also in 15th cent. as pewderer ; compare Old French peautrier (1300), Middle French peaultier (1530); < Old French peautre pewter n. + -er -er suffix2), and partly < pewter n. + -er suffix1. Compare Italian †peltraro (1578), peltraio (1640).Recorded from 1305 as a surname (John le Peutrer), although this should probably be taken as reflecting the Anglo-Norman word. It is uncertain whether the following should be taken as reflecting the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word:1311 in G. Otto Handwerkernamen in Mittelengl. (1938) 83 Peauterer.
A worker in pewter; a person who makes pewter utensils.
