Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pesanteur.
Etymology: < Middle French, French pesanteur (c1175 in Old French as pesantor ) < pesant (see peisant adj.) + -eur -or suffix.In form pesanture (see quot. 1689) perhaps after -ure suffix1, although perhaps compare Middle French pesanture (a1389 in an apparently isolated attestation; 1213 in Old French).
