Etymology: < classical Latin pervīs-, past participial stem of pervidēre to see fully, to take in with the mind, discern < per- per- prefix + vidēre to see (see vision n.).Perhaps influenced in meaning by peruse v., with which it could be confused in writing, especially in Scots (compare variant perwuys s.v. and also variants vise , vyse s.v. use v.). In quots. 1577 and 1611 it is possible that the word is to be interpreted as a variant of peruse v. instead. Compare the following earlier quot. in which peruse v. has been misread by the editor of the text as pervise:1549 Let. 18 May in J.
