Etymology: < the female forename Phyllis, Phillis < classical Latin Phyllis , the name of the daughter of King Sithon of Thrace, who was changed into an almond tree, a stock female name in poetry < Hellenistic Greek Φυλλίς , female name, lit. foliage of a tree < ϕύλλον leaf (see phyllo- comb. form) + -ις -id suffix2.The English spelling appears to be influenced by association with words in phil- , philo- (see philo- comb. form).
Chiefly poetic. Now rare.
A pretty country girl; a female sweetheart. Also (after Milton: see quot. 1645): a pretty or dexterous female servant.Originally as a generic proper name in pastoral poetry. Cf. philander n.1 1.
