Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek Φιλιππίζειν.
Etymology: < ancient Greek Φιλιππίζειν to take the side of Philip II of Macedon (Demosthenes) < Φίλιππος , the name of Philip II of Macedon (see Philippian n. and adj.) + -ίζειν -ize suffix.
Now historical and rare.
intransitive. To favour or take the side of Philip of Macedon; (hence more generally) to speak or write as one who has been wrongly or corruptly inspired or influenced.Originally with reference to the priestess of Apollo, who was believed to deliver oracles in Philip's favour after he took control of the shrine at Delphi.
