释义

Philip and Cheyneyn.

Forms: 1500s Philippe and Chenye, 1500s–1600s Philip and Cheiny, 1600s Philip and Chey, 1600s Philip and Cheyney, 1600s Phillipp and Chainey, 1600s Phillipp and China; Scottish pre-1700 Philipchina, pre-1700 Philipe and Jeane, pre-1700 Philipengyn, pre-1700 Philipschun, pre-1700 Phillepe and Cheny, pre-1700 Phillip and Cheny, pre-1700 Phillip and Cheyne, pre-1700 Phillipinchena, pre-1700 Phillopainchina, pre-1700 Philp and Chinais.
Origin: Apparently from proper names, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper names Philip , Cheyney , and conj.1.
Etymology: Apparently < Philip, male forename, also used as surname (see Philip n.) + and conj.1 + Cheyney, surname. E. Kerridge Textile Manufactures in Early Modern England (1985) 52–3 suggests that sense 2 may have arisen from folk-etymological alteration of a French phrase *phelpe et chaine ( < Old French feupe (see frippery n.) + French et and + French chaine warp (13th cent. in Old French in this sense: see chain n.)), assumed to have been in use among Walloon weavers; he compares also Dutch *felp en schering in the same sense. However, it is not clear whether there is any evidence for the existence of such an expression in either French or Dutch. In some forms apparently associated with the name of China (see China n.1).
