Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕιλέλλην (adjective) loving the Greeks < ϕιλο- philo- comb. form + Ἕλλην Hellene n. Compare French philellène (1823, especially with reference to supporters of Greek independence), Italian filelleno lover of Greek culture (a1604, later also with reference to Greek nationalism). Compare earlier philhellenist n.
