Etymology: < French phatagin (Buffon Hist. nat. (1763) X. 192) < Hellenistic Greek ϕαττάγης an animal mentioned by Aelian, perhaps a species of pangolin (of uncertain origin, perhaps an eastern loanword) + French -in (compare -in suffix2, -ine suffix4).Compare scientific Latin Phataginus, genus name (valid publication: C. S. Rafinesque in Ann. gén. Sci. Phys. (Bruxelles) (1821) 214, after earlier but invalid use in his Analyse de la nature (1815) 57).
Now historical and rare.
The long-tailed pangolin, Phataginus (or Manis) tetradactyla, an arboreal pangolin of southern Africa.
