Inflections: Plural phases, (irregular) phasies.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin phasis; Greek ϕάσις.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin phasis (late 4th or early 5th cent.) or its etymon ancient Greek ϕάσις appearance, in Hellenistic Greek also phase < ϕα- , ablaut variant of the stem of ϕαίνειν to bring to light, cause to appear, show (see -phane comb. form) + -σις -sis suffix. Compare phase n.2In some instances it is not possible to determine whether the form phases represents the plural of phasis n. or phase n.2
