Etymology: < classical Latin pertransient-, pertransiēns, present participle of pertransīre to pass right through < per- per- prefix + transīre to go across (see transient adj. and n.). With use as noun compare pertingent n. With use as adjective compare slightly earlier pertingent adj.

Heraldry. On a coat of arms: a line which passing through the centre of the shield from top to bottom. Esp. in entire pertransient. Cf. pertingent n. Obsolete.
