Etymology: < Middle French pertinacité (1422; earlier as pertinaxité (1419); French pertinacité (now rare)) and its etymon post-classical Latin pertinacitas obstinacy (6th cent. in an Italian source; from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin pertināc- , pertināx pertinace adj. + -itās -ity suffix. Compare Italian †pertinacità (c1325). Compare earlier pertinacy n.With post-classical Latin pertinacitas beside classical Latin pertinācia pertinacy n. compare classical Latin tenācitās tenacity n. beside tenācia.
