Etymology: < petty adj. + custom n., after post-classical Latin parva custuma (from early 14th cent. in British, especially Scottish, sources). Compare petit custom n. at petit adj. and n. Compounds 1.First referred to as parva custuma , literally ‘the little custom’, and usually distinguished from magna custuma , or ‘the great custom’, charged on exports (see custom n. 3); compare:c1320 Iter Camerarii c. 1 in Acts Parl. Scotl. (1844) I. 693 Braxiatores, carnifices, custumarios magne et parue custume. 15th c. Sc. transl. Breustaris fleschewaris custumaris alswel of greit custom as of small custum.
Chiefly Scottish. Now historical.
A lesser toll or duty; spec. that formerly charged upon goods entering a town or burgh for sale at its markets. Frequently in plural. See also petit custom n. at petit adj. and n. Compounds 1.
