Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin perstringere.
Etymology: < classical Latin perstringere to bind tightly, draw together, to graze, rub, to blunt, make dull, to touch slightly, glance at, to touch or wound slightly with words, to censure, reprimand < per- per- prefix + stringere to tie, bind (see stringent adj.). With sense 3 compare Italian †perstringere to summarize (facts, a story) (a1530).Classical Latin perstringere is often confused with praestringere to bind fast, also to touch upon, mention, especially in praestringere oculōs to blindfold, to dazzle the eyes (see prestige n.).
Now rare (literary and archaic).
