Etymology: < classical Latin perspicuus transparent, clearly visible, conspicuous, clear, evident, lucid, in post-classical Latin also penetrating, discerning (late 4th cent. in Augustine), clear-sighted (early 5th cent. in Augustine), outstanding (6th cent.; < perspicere to see through (see perspective adj.) + -uus , suffix forming adjectives) + -ous suffix. Compare Middle French, French †perspicu transparent (c1490). Compare earlier perspicuate adj.With sense 3 compare also perspicacious adj.
