Etymology: < Middle French, French perspicacité discernment, discrimination (1444) and its etymon post-classical Latin perspicacitas discernment, discrimination (4th cent.), keenness of sight (13th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin perspicāc- , perspicāx discerning, having keen or penetrating sight (see perspicacious adj.) + -itās -ity suffix. In sense 2 probably after classical Latin perspicāx. Compare perspicacious adj., and also perspicience n.
