Etymology: < post-classical Latin phlysacium (1690 in the source translated in quot. 1693 at main sense) < classical Latin phlyzacion kind of pustule (Celsus) < ancient Greek ϕλυζάκιον (Hippocrates) < Byzantine Greek ϕλύζειν to boil over, bubble up (see phlycten n.; -ϕλύζειν is already recorded in Hellenistic Greek διαϕλύζειν to moisten, and may be earlier) + ancient Greek -άκιον (in e.g. Hellenistic Greek ψυδράκιον psydracium n.). N.E.D.(1906) gives the pronunciation as (flizēi·ʃiɒ̆m, -siɒ̆m) /flɪˈzeɪʃɪəm/, /-sɪəm/.
Medicine. Obsolete.
A pustule, spec. one on an inflamed, raised base.
