Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from German. Etymons: French phloridzin; German Phloridzin.
Etymology: < French phloridzin (L. de Koninck and J.-S. Stas 1835, in Bull. de l'Acad. Royale des Sci. et Belles-Lettres de Bruxelles 2 5; also as phloridzine , phlorizine , phlorhizine ) or its etymon German Phloridzin (L. de Koninck 1835, in Ann. der Pharm. 15 76; Phlorrhizin is suggested there by the editor as the proper form of the word) < ancient Greek ϕλοιός bark (see phloem n.) + ῥίζα root (see rhizo- comb. form) + German -in -in suffix1.
Chemistry.
A crystalline compound, C21H24O10, which is a glucoside of phloretin, occurs widely in apple and other fruit trees, and acts biochemically as an uncoupler.
