Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin phlegmatia , -ous suffix; Greek ϕλέγματ- , ϕλέγμα , -ous suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin phlegmat- (in phlegmatia: see phlegmasia n.) + -ous suffix, or < ancient Greek ϕλέγματ-, stem of ϕλέγμα phlegm n. + -ous suffix, after phlegmasia n. Compare earlier phlegmonous adj.Compare post-classical Latin phlegmatodes full of phlegm (6th cent.), applied to a type of phlegmon (18th cent.), ancient Greek ϕλεγματώδης full of phlegm, inflammatory.
