Etymology: In senses 1 and 2 apparently < person n. + -ably suffix, respectively after Middle Dutch persoonlīke in the manner of a person of importance, and Middle French personablement personally (1381), post-classical Latin personabiliter personally (c1250 in a British source). In sense 3 < personable adj. + -ly suffix2.
