单词 pettichaps
释义

pettichapsn.

Brit. /ˈpɛtɪtʃaps/, U.S. /ˈpɛdiˌtʃæps/
Forms: 1600s 1800s– pettichaps, 1600s–1800s pettychaps, 1800s pettichap (English regional (Northamptonshire)).
Origin: Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Probably imitative of the bird's call, but probably with assimilation to petty adj. and chap n.2 (or perhaps chap n.3).The name entered the ornithological literature when a specimen of the bird was sent to Willughby from Sheffield c1670. N.E.D. (1905) records current regional use only from Yorkshire (probably reflecting quot. 1894) and Lancashire (compare H. K. Swann Dict. Eng. & Folk-names Brit. Birds (1913) at greater pettychaps), although this is apparently not supported by any of the regional glossaries or by Eng. Dial. Dict., which records use only from Northamptonshire (compare quot. 1851) and Cornwall (citing E. H. Rodd Birds Cornwall (1880)).
Chiefly English regional. Now archaic.
Either of two warblers: (a) (more fully greater pettichaps) the garden warbler, Sylvia borin; (b) (more fully lesser pettichaps) the chiffchaff, Phylloscopus collybita. Also: †the long-tailed tit, Aegithalos caudatus (obsolete rare).
