Etymology: < German Petrosilex (J. G. Wallerius Mineralogie oder Mineralreich (1750) 124) < petro- petro- comb. form¹ + classical Latin silex flint, pebble (see silex n.¹). Compare French pétrosilex (1753), post-classical Latin petrosilex (1758 in the passage translated in quot. 1770).

Geology. Now rare.
