Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Petrosilex.
Etymology: < German Petrosilex (J. G. Wallerius Mineralogie oder Mineralreich (1750) 124) < petro- petro- comb. form1 + classical Latin silex flint, pebble (see silex n.1). Compare French pétrosilex (1753), post-classical Latin petrosilex (1758 in the passage translated in quot. 1770).
Geology. Now rare.
Any of various hard, compact, igneous or metamorphic rocks rich in silica; esp. (a) hornstone or chert; (b) felsite.

2001 China Daily (Nexis) 4 July It looks exactly like a piece of pork or beef. Experts say such rocks are petrosilex, forms of sedimentary and metamorphic rock that have been formed over long periods of time by the movement of magma which contains a variety of minerals that give them unusual colours.
