Etymology: < scientific Latin Petromyzon, genus name (Linnaeus Systema naturæ (1735); < ancient Greek πέτρος stone (see petro- comb. form¹) + μύζων sucking, sucker, present participle of μύζειν to suck: see myzont n.), formed with reference to the etymological explanation of post-classical Latin lampetra as being from classical Latin lambere to lick + petra stone (see etymological note at lamprey n.).
