Etymology: < post-classical Latin Pharsalia, alternative title of Lucan's De bello civili, Latin epic on the civil war between Caesar and Pompey, probably arising from a misinterpretation of the occurrence in the poem (at 9. 985) of classical Latin Pharsālia, the name of the district round Pharsalus, use as noun of feminine singular of Pharsālius of or connected with Pharsalus, especially as the site of Caesar's defeat of Pompey in 48 b.c. < Pharsālus (ancient Greek Φάρσαλος), the name of a town in Thessaly + -ius, suffix forming adjectives. Compare French †pharsalie (1654 or earlier in this sense).
