Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Pharos ; Greek Φάρος , -logy comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin Pharos or its etymon ancient Greek Φάρος pharos n.1 + -logy comb. form.An occasional formation pharonology (perhaps by analogy with words ending in -onology) is also attested:1867 W. H. Smyth & E. Belcher Sailor's Word-bk. Pharonology denotes the study of, and acquaintance with light-houses.
