Etymology: < classical Latin Petrus, the name of St Peter (see Peter n.) + -ine suffix1, perhaps after Pauline adj. Compare ancient Greek πέτρινος stony, rocky, post-classical Latin petrinus of stone (Vetus Latina). Compare earlier petrean adj.In sense 2 after the name of Peter the Great, tsar of Russia.
