Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin petra.
Etymology: < classical Latin petra (see petro- comb. form1). In oil of petre after post-classical Latin oleum de petra petroleum (14th cent. in a British glossarial source). Compare later petre n.2 With oil of petre compare earlier petroleum n. and slightly later oil (of) petrol at petrol n. 1, petrol n. 1. N.E.D. (1905) includes in the same entry as petre n.2 and gives the pronunciation as (pī·təɹ) /ˈpiːtə(r)/.
Obsolete.
