Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: proper name Petrarch , -esque suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Petrarch (see Petrarchan adj. and n.) + -esque suffix, perhaps after Italian petrarchesco (a1588 in this sense; a1556 in sense ‘polished, cultivated, using affected language’ (of a person)). Compare French pétrarquesque (1845), Spanish petrarquesco (end of the 18th cent. or earlier). Compare earlier Petrarchian adj., Petrarchistical adj., and slightly later Petrarchan adj.
Characteristic of or in the style of Petrarch. Cf. Petrarchan adj., Petrarchian adj.
