Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish peto.
Etymology: < Spanish peto (1499 or earlier in general sense ‘breast-plate, armour protecting the chest’, 1928 or earlier in the specific bullfighting sense) < Italian petto breast-plate, armour protecting the chest (15th cent. or earlier in this sense, 16th cent. or earlier with reference to horses), transferred use of petto breast (see petto n.).
