Etymology: Probably an alteration of Anglo-Norman peiz resine, Middle French poiz resine (1404) (compare Old French pois resine (13th cent.)) < peiz pitch ( < classical Latin pix , pic- : see pitch n.1) + resine resin n. and adj. Compare slightly later pitch-rosin n.
Obsolete.
A kind of gum or resin, esp. the dry resin obtained from pine trees; colophony.
