Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French perriere, perrier.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman perriere, periere and Old French perrier (c1174 in Old French in sense ‘catapult, stone-throwing machine’; French pierrier ), either < pierre pier n.2 + -ier -ier suffix (compare -er suffix2), or < post-classical Latin petrarium (see petrary n.). Compare post-classical Latin perraria , perreria , perreira (from early 13th cent. in British sources), Old Occitan peirier (a1149); compare also Spanish pedrero pedrero n. and further Romance cognates cited at that entry.With sense 2 compare later petrary n.

Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Perrier.
Etymology: < the name of Source Perrier, the spring at Vergèze in the south of France, which provides the water (itself named after Dr Louis Perrier (d. 1912), who took possession of the source spring in 1894).In 1904 Dr Perrier sold the spring to Sir John Harmsworth, who then named it in his honour.
A proprietary name for: a sparkling natural mineral water from the south of France; a drink of this. More fully Perrier water.
