Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin perquīsītor.
Etymology: < classical Latin perquīsītor person who conducts a thorough search, in post-classical Latin also person who acquires, buyer, purchaser (from 13th cent. in British sources) < perquīsīt- , past participial stem of perquīrere perquire v. + -or -or suffix. Compare French perquisiteur (1360 in Middle French in sense ‘person who conducts a thorough search’; subsequently from 1819 in sense ‘person who conducts a thorough search of property’).
