Origin: Probably of multiple origins. A borrowing from Latin. Probably also partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin perquisition-, perquisitio; French perquisition.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin perquisition-, perquisitio inquiry, research (5th cent.), purchase, acquisition, thing acquired, profit (from 12th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin perquīsīt- , past participial stem of perquīrere perquire v. + -iō -ion suffix1; in sense 2 probably via Middle French, French perquisition (1473 in this sense).
