Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin perplicātus , -ion suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin perplicātus interlaced, entangled, past participle of perplicāre to tangle, entwine ( < per- per- prefix + plicāre to fold: see fold v.1; compare plicate v.) + -ion suffix1.Blount (see quot. 1656) gives the otherwise unattested Latin form *perplicatio as etymon.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
The action or an instance of folding back or pleating something, spec. (Surgery) as a method of repairing a bleeding artery (see quot. 1853).
