Etymology: < philanthropy n. + -ist suffix. Compare earlier misanthropist n. and slightly later philanthrope n.
A benefactor of humankind; one who behaves benevolently towards others; a practitioner of philanthropy.Now usually denoting a philanthropic or charitable person, but formerly having the more general sense ‘friend or lover of humankind’, and hence applied also to benevolent or friendly gods, animals, etc.
