Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πήρωσις.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πήρωσις maiming < πηροῦν to maim ( < πηρός maimed, of uncertain origin) + -σις -sis suffix. Compare post-classical Latin perosis (1528).
Veterinary Medicine.
A deformity of the leg in poultry involving dislocation of the gastrocnemius tendon, thought to be the result of a dietary deficiency.
