Etymology: < post-classical Latin perona fibula (6th cent.) and its etymon ancient Greek περόνη pin, buckle, in Hellenistic Greek also fibula (Galen; in ancient Greek as a variant reading in Hippocrates) < πείρειν to pierce, run through ( < the same Indo-European base as fare v.¹) + -όνη, suffix forming nouns of instrument. Compare French péroné (1522 in Middle French).In form peronè (see quot. 1739) probably mistakenly after French péroné. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pe·rŏnī) /ˈpɛrəniː/.
