Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pērōnātus.

Etymology: < classical Latin pērōnātus wearing heavy raw-hide boots < pērōn- , pērō thick boot of raw hide (of uncertain origin; perhaps related to ancient Greek πήρα bag, pouch: see peridium n.) + -ātus -ate suffix².Latin pērōnātus was used as a specific name for a fungus with a peronate stipe by J. Bolton, in Hist. Fungusses (1788), II. xxxi. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pī^ə·rŏnĕt) /ˈpɪərənət/.

Mycology. Now rare.

Of the stipe of a fungus: having a volva or veil forming a cottony or woolly sheath round its lower part.
