Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pērōnātus.
Etymology: < classical Latin pērōnātus wearing heavy raw-hide boots < pērōn- , pērō thick boot of raw hide (of uncertain origin; perhaps related to ancient Greek πήρα bag, pouch: see peridium n.) + -ātus -ate suffix2.Latin pērōnātus was used as a specific name for a fungus with a peronate stipe by J. Bolton, in Hist. Fungusses (1788), II. xxxi. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pīə·rŏnĕt) /ˈpɪərənət/.
Mycology. Now rare.
Of the stipe of a fungus: having a volva or veil forming a cottony or woolly sheath round its lower part.

1832 J. Lindley Introd. Bot. 396 Peronate; laid thickly over with a woolly substance, ending in a sort of meal... This term is only applied to the stipes of Fungi.
1885 Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 12 33 A volva-like annulus... It appears in the dried specimen very much as if it were a real volva... Still, it may be only a thick peronate or sheathing veil.
1995 D. L. Hawksworth et al. Ainsworth & Bisby's Dict. of Fungi (ed. 8) 340/1 Peronate, sheathed; having a boot or covering, esp. of the lower part of a stipe covered by a volva or veil.
