Wagler Natürliches System der Amphibien (1830) 160) < Hellenistic Greek πηρομελής with maimed limbs < ancient Greek πηρός maimed (see perosis n.) + μέλος limb: see melos n.) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pi^ərǫ·mĭləs) /pɪəˈrɒmɪləs/.

Zoology. Obsolete.
