Etymology: < scientific Latin Peromela, former group name ( < French Péromelés , plural noun (A. M. C. Duméril & G. Bibron Erpétologie générale (1841) VIII. 259) < scientific Latin Peromelis (J. G. Wagler Natürliches System der Amphibien (1830) 160) < Hellenistic Greek πηρομελής with maimed limbs < ancient Greek πηρός maimed (see perosis n.) + μέλος limb: see melos n.) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (piərǫ·mĭləs) /pɪəˈrɒmɪləs/.
Zoology. Obsolete.
(Of an amphibian) having no limbs; characteristic of the former group Peromela.
