Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek ϕανερο-, ϕανερός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕανερο-, combining form (in e.g. ϕανερομισής openly hating) of ϕανερός visible, evident < the stem of ϕαίνειν to show, cause to appear (see -phane comb. form) + -ρος, suffix forming adjectives. Compare scientific Latin phanero-, French phanéro-.Earliest in borrowings from Latin (phanerogamous adj., Phanerogamia n.) in the first half of the 19th cent. Formations in English are mainly found between the mid 19th and early 20th centuries. Compare crypto- comb. form. In French, the combining form is first attested in the late 18th cent. in phanérogame , adjective. In scientific Latin it first appears at the beginning of the 19th cent. in phanerogamus , adjective. With both forms compare phanerogam n.
Forming adjectives with the sense ‘visibly, clearly, in a manner or form visible to the naked eye’, and nouns with the sense ‘visible, evident’.
