Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin petiolaceus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin petiolaceus (A. P. de Candolle Théorie élémentaire de la botanique (1813) 330; < classical Latin petiolus petiole n. + -āceus : see -aceous suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare French pétiolacé (1813 in de Candolle). Compare earlier petiolar adj., petiolary adj.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Petiolar; spec. designating a bud covered with scales derived from the bases of petioles (cf. stipulaceous adj.).
