Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pernod.
Etymology: < French pernod a type of absinthe (1891: see note), an aniseed-flavoured aperitif (1937) < the name of Pernod Fils (now the Pernod Ricard Group), the firm which produces the drink.The firm Pernod Fils earlier produced a drink called elixir pernod at Pontarlier (1805).
A proprietary name for: an aperitif, esp. (originally) absinthe, (now) a clear yellow-green aniseed-flavoured drink; a drink of this.
