Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pernoctāt-, pernoctāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin pernoctāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of pernoctāre to spend or occupy the night < per- per- prefix + noct- , nox night (see nocti- comb. form). Compare Middle French, French pernocter (1419), Old Occitan pernoctar (1442), Catalan pernoctar (1344), Spanish pernoctar (1391).

intransitive. To stay all night; to pass the night (esp. in prayer).
