Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: Latin pernoctāre , -al suffix1, -ian suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin pernoctāre (see pernoctate v.) + -al suffix1 + -ian suffix, as if < a post-classical Latin form *pernoctalia (neuter plural) ‘all-night vigils’.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
A person who keeps vigil all night.
