A former genus of ericaceous plants (now included in the genus Gaultheria) consisting of small evergreen shrubs with leathery leaves, white flowers, and variously coloured berries, which are native to Central and South America, New Zealand, and Tasmania; (also pernettya) a plant formerly placed in this genus, esp. Gaultheria mucronata (formerly Pernettya mucronata), grown for its coloured berries and as cover for game.
