Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Pernettia, Pernettya.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Pernettia (C. Gaudichaud-Beaupré 1825, in Ann. des sci. nat. 5 102; later Pernettya) < the name of A. J. Pernetty (1716–1801), French explorer (see note) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix¹.Gaudichaud-Beaupré named the genus after Pernetty in honour of his account of his voyage to the Falkland Islands in 1763–4 (published in 1769), which contained a description of a plant of this genus.

A former genus of ericaceous plants (now included in the genus Gaultheria) consisting of small evergreen shrubs with leathery leaves, white flowers, and variously coloured berries, which are native to Central and South America, New Zealand, and Tasmania; (also pernettya) a plant formerly placed in this genus, esp. Gaultheria mucronata (formerly Pernettya mucronata), grown for its coloured berries and as cover for game.
