Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin permūtant- , permūtāns ; permute v., -ant suffix1.
Etymology: Either < classical Latin permūtant-, permūtāns, present participle of permūtāre permute v., or < permute v. + -ant suffix1.
1. Mathematics. A function formed from two or more of the possible permutations of a group of items linearly arranged, each being positive or negative according to whether it is obtained by an even or odd number of interchanges. Obsolete.
