Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin philosophaster.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin philosophaster person who dabbles in philosophy (5th cent. in Augustine) < classical Latin philosophus philosophe n. + -aster -aster suffix. Compare French philosophâtre (1721; 1512 in Middle French as philosophastre), Italian filosofastro (1558 or earlier; also as †philosofastro (1611 in Florio)).Attested slightly earlier as a proper name:1610 R. Sharpe More Fooles Yet sig. E2 Because Diogenes on rootes did feed, Philosophaster turnes Diogenes: Obserues his dyet, and doth still proceed To imitate that Cynicks bitternes.
